VPRS 4660 Register of Deposit Receipts

The Department of Roads and Bridges (VA 2964) was responsible for the construction and maintenance of roads and bridges from 1858 until 1871 when the function was assumed by the Department of Railways and Roads (VA 2875).Much of the work of construction and maintenance was completed by contractors. Contractors were customarily required to lodge a security bond with the Department as a guarantee of their solvency and thus their financial capacity to complete the contract. This series registers the receipt of that security bond and its subsequent return to the contractor. Details include the date of deposit , the name of the depositor, the number of the receipt, the contract number to which it was applicable and details of refunds including the acknowledgment of the recipient.
