This series contains petitions by individuals to be admitted as attorneys, solicitors and barristers to the Supreme Court of New South Wales.On 13 October 1823, the King issued letters patent (known as the Charter of Justice) which established the Supreme Court of New South Wales and provided for, amongst other things, the admission of barristers, solicitors and attorneys to practice before it. The Charter took effect on 17 May 1824. (1)The files contain bundles of papers and are arranged alphabetically by surname. The contents of each file vary, but may include documents in support of the person's petition such as:- Affidavit from the applicant, often outlining his experience and place of employment- Examination questions and answers, on such topics as Real and Personal Property and Pleading and Evidence (including 'Stephen on Pleading')- Indenture of Assignment of Articles of Clerkship Proof of admission to the King's Bench in England- Questions answered by the Church Minister- Questions answered by the Master Attorney- Questions answered by the Clerk (the applicant)Endnote1.
