New Attitudes and Forms of Participation, 1987: Finland

The purpose of the survey is to examine whether the grass-roots movement has changed from the 1960s and 1970s, when the youth revolt and the large social movements started. In the 1970s the grass-roots movement formed part of a large-scale political mobilization. The results of this survey are compared with the results of previous surveys which dealt with the forms of behaviour which, according to different theoretical backgrounds, have been called action participation, protest behaviour or grass-roots participation. By comparing the new and the older surveys it becomes possible to find out whether it is the same type of people who participates, whether people commit themselves to the same causes, and whether grass-roots participation plays the same role in the political life as it did in the 1970s
