Siamang Song and Locomotion

This dataset comprises audiovisual recordings of siamang (Symphalangus syndactylus) collected at Jaderpark Tier- und Freizeitpark an der Nordsee, a zoo in northern Germany that houses a family group in a semi-natural outdoor enclosure. The recordings were made over 21 research days across two months in the summer of 2022, yielding more than seven hours of multi-angle audiovisual material of siamang singing. The dataset includes identification photographs, recording details and experiment notes, terrain sketches, and both opportunistic and random sampling videos with accompanying audio files. Siamangs belong to the small Asian apes or gibbons (Hylobatidae), a family phylogenetically closely related to humans and great apes. Like humans, gibbons are highly vocal, producing daily duetting songs to maintain and advertise pair bonds within their territory. Gibbons also move extensively during singing, making this dataset particularly valuable for investigating vocal-motor coupling. Six individuals were recorded: the adult female Pelangi (18 years, 10 months), the adult male Roger (29 years, 10 months), the subadult male Baju (7 years, 8 months), the juvenile male Fajar (4 years, 11 months), the infantile male Jamil (3 years, 6 months), and the newborn male Tristan (6 weeks).
