PR Data for Data Play

This is SAHFOS data from our Continuous Plankton Recorder tow across the English Channel from Roscoff (France) to Plymouth (UK). The sampler is towed by volunteer vessels (operated by Brittany Ferries). Each sample comprises a length of silk which captures plankton (microscopic ocean plants) from a 10 nautical mile transect of water (approx. 3m3) during transit across the channel. This data set includes observation of Phytoplankton Colour Index (i.e. ‘how green the water is’) and an estimate of the total abundance of select phytoplankton species (i.e. ‘how many phytoplankton are in the water’).
