Azithromycin (AZM) mass drug administration (MDA) programmes to reduce childhood mortality are expanding in Africa, but concerns remain about the long-term effects on antimicrobial resistance (AMR). We evaluated the persistence and spread of Streptococcus pneumoniae (pneumococcus) AMR following a community-randomised AZM-MDA trial in Malawi.
