Starting from some recent developments, we will review the literary testimonies on the ways in which the ancient Greeks looked at the 'Capo Iapigio' and southern Salento and then the epigraphic documentation in Greek and Messapic language returned from the sites of area in question, trying to highlight the clues that can be deduced regarding the debated question of the ancient or rather Byzantine-medieval origin of the 'grico' and of the so-called 'Grecìa salentina'.
