In many temperate taxa, flowering cannot be rapidly induced without vernalization, the outcome of which is readiness to flower with the approaching spring without premature flowering at the end of winter. Although the genetic basis of vernalization responsiveness is well understood in model eudicots and monocots, the distinction between floral competency and induction is still not fully understood. Here, we utilize transcriptome data from Brachypodium distachyon, a vernalization-responsive grass species, to distinguish between different models of flowering time control.
