The human gut serves as a critical organ, with gut fungi playing an essential part in preserving intestinal health. Despite this, research into gut fungi is relatively scarce compared to other aspects of the gut microbiome. In this particular study, we have identified a novel fungal strain from the gut microbiota that holds considerable therapeutic potential for the treatment of intestinal inflammation. Additional research has indicated that this strain of fungi, referred to as Pt, generates a bioactive compound known as DC12, which can be isolated and has been shown to effectively mitigate intestinal inflammation. Mechanistic studies have demonstrated that DC12 interacts with the enzyme enolase 1 (ENO1), leading to an increased expression of the Yes-associated protein 1 (YAP1). This interaction aids in the restoration and regeneration of intestinal epithelial cells, thus speeding up the recovery process. Our research underscores the therapeutic potential of compounds derived from gut fungi and presents a novel approach to managing intestinal inflammatory conditions.
