This metadata refers to the Land Cover Change vector data generated over Timor Leste or East Timor (Southeast Asian) in the framework of the Copernicus Global Land Hot Spot Mapping (C-GL-HSM) contract under the coordination of JRC. This area of interest is either mapped with the generic 8 classes dichotomus legend or the detailed modular legend.
The mapped area of interest (AOI) represents a Key Landscape for Conservation area (KLC). Timor Leste represent the eastern part of the Timor Island, located in between southeast Asia and Oceania and is part of maritime southeast Asia. The country has a size of about 15,000 km² and is among the five newest countries in the World, gaining independence from Indonesia in 2002.
The geography is characterised by a predominantly mountainous landscape (with the highest peak reaching nearly 3000 m) and the climate is tropical and generally hot and humid. According to Protected Planet, the country has 46 protected areas from which only one represents a National Park. The Nino Konis Santana National Park, Timor Leste’s first National Park, was established in 2008 and covers the entire eastern end of the island and has a size of 716 km².
