Diabetes is now one of the most common non-communicable diseases globally, and becoming the leading risk factor of cardiovascular disease and associated complications that result in potential morbidity and mortality. However, the liver changes in the early stage of diabetes is still unknown because the importance of liver function in the development and treatment of diabetes. In recent years, the next generation sequencing technologies has developed to be a powerful tool to explore the transcriptome characterization and gene expression profiling in a high-throughput manner, and it has been gradually used in the research of metabolism diseases. Additionally, tree shrew has been reported to be a potentially new animal model to study metabolic diseases. In this study, we characterized the liver transcriptome profiles of diabetic tree shrews to determine the differentially expressed genes, and to explore the role of hyperglycemia in liver changes.
