RobotDesign1M is a large-scale, multimodal dataset for robot design understanding, built from image–text data curated from scientific literature across a wide range of robotics domains. It is designed to support research on design-aware foundation models, including design image generation, visual question answering about designs, and design image retrieval. The dataset includes two configurations: conversations and image_caption. In the conversations configuration, each sample consists of an image and a series of multi-turn dialogs with user and assistant text for visual-instruction tuning; in the image_caption configuration, each sample includes an image and associated caption text. The dataset is split into train, validation, and test sets, with total examples in the millions, e.g., approximately 3.09 million training examples in conversations and 4.48 million in image_caption. It addresses the gap of lacking large-scale design datasets by providing multimodal samples extracted from scientific documents, where each sample links a robot design image to relevant text, such as image captions or question–answer dialogs, to enable applications like automated design generation, text-based design retrieval, and AI-powered design assistants.
