The Diversity of Butterfly in the Campuses of Indonesian Universities

The diversity of butterflies in a habitat is strongly influenced by various existing environmental factors such as abiotic and biotic factors, so that knowing its diversity and community are become important to study the condition of environment. This study intends to compile a thorough inventory of butterflies in Universitas Andalas campus complex (UACC) in Limau Manis, Padang, West Sumatra. To achieve more complete result, the study combined the inventory data of butterflies sampled with direct collection method (insect net) and indirect one (cylindrical Gause method with fermented fruit as bait). Butterfly samplings were located at sites around the campus complex, from within the building complex which impacted by anthropogenic activities up until the forested area within the Biological Educational and Research Forest (BERF) at the eastern side of campus. The data compiled in this inventory spanned from 2011, 2020 and 2022. As result, a total of 83 species from 50 genera and four families were recorded within the UACC area. Nymphalidae was observed to have the highest number of species (55 species), followed by Pieridae (12 species), Papilionidae (10 species) and Lycaenidae (4 species), Hesperiadae (two). This study also recorded Troides amphrysus and Trogonoptera brookiana, two protected butterfly species, to frequent the UACC area as their habitat. Despite most species collected with insect net, yet some species seem to be exclusively collected from using the Cylindrical Gaus which indicates the importance of using combined collection methods for better inventory result.
