The objective of this study is improve our understanding of the maturation of a healthy and functional gastrointestinal tract in young ruminants. In particular, our attention will focus on the change of the mucosal microbial communities during the first weeks of life. The role of these microbial populations in fostering host defense, and in promoting optimal health and production, have been well described in other species.
