Hoki Management Areas

This layer shows the Hoki Management Areas (HMA). The names of the four management areas are as follows: *Cook Strait *Mernoo Bank *Canterbury Banks *Puysegur Bank These areas are shown as defined in the Hoki Fishery Operational Procedures Version 18.0 The areas are defined where there is information to demonstrate the presence of high abundances of juvenile hoki (hoki <55cm in total length). Trawlers that are greater than 28m LOA are not permitted to target hoki inside any of the HMAs shown on the map. This means that any tow (and the subsequent catch) which starts, ends or occurs in part in an HMA (regardless of start and end positions) will be deemed to have occurred within the HMA. Vessel operators will treat the HMA boundaries as they would a mandatory line and require their vessels to use a buffer to prevent accidental crossing into the HMAs while fishing. Trawlers that are greater than 28m LOA (Length OverAll) are not permitted to target hoki inside any of the HMAs shown on the map. This means that any tow (and the subsequent catch) which starts, ends or occurs in part in an HMA (regardless of start and end positions) will be deemed to have occurred within the HMA. Vessel operators will treat the HMA boundaries as they would a mandatory line and require their vessels to use a buffer to prevent accidental crossing into the HMAs while fishing.
