About this record: This is a benchmark-template publication from the Infinity Engine. Per the no-competition framing doctrine, this record uses only neutral language: same data, same moment, different methods, different numbers. Classification labels used in this record: [MEASURED] direct observation, [METHODOLOGY] method itself, [INFERRED] deterministic derivation, [VALIDATED] instrument check passed, [PRE-REGISTERED] forward prediction awaiting falsification, [SYNTHESIS] interpretation across results, [HYPOTHESIZED] asserted but not yet validated. 1. Abstract [SYNTHESIS] Quiet observation ledger. Infinity's locked harmonic regression is applied to the same data several published forecasting methods used at their prediction time, on 5 documented scientific forecasting events with now-known truth values. Each method's number is placed next to truth in chronological order by publication year. No rankings, no winners, no scores. The numbers speak for themselves. Per the doctrine, this record is governed by feedback_no_competition_framing.md: Infinity is not in competition with NASA, NOAA, ECMWF, JMA, or any published method. Each method has its own assumptions and natural domain. The point is not to declare a winner — it is to honestly report what each method produced when given the same input. 2. Method Statement [METHODOLOGY] For each documented event: The relevant agency dataset is truncated to data ending on or before each published prediction's date — so Infinity sees exactly what each agency saw at the moment they made their forecast. Infinity's locked harmonic-regression configuration (the same one used for the cycle 25 forward prediction) is applied. The resulting number is placed in a chronological table alongside every published prediction for the same event. Distance from truth is reported as a signed percentage. Nothing more. Field names in the underlying code are deliberately neutral: observation_table() not ranking_table(), distance_from_truth not error, summary not record. The forbidden words win, lose, beat, vs, rank, leaderboard, best, worst do not appear in the source code, the dashboard, or this description. 3. Data Provenance [MEASURED] The events covered (and the agency datasets they use): Solar Cycle 23, 24, 25 peak sunspot number — SILSO daily total sunspot number V2.0 (Royal Observatory of Belgium / SIDC, CC-BY-NC 4.0) ENSO 2014 false alarm and 2015-16 super event — NOAA CPC Oceanic Niño Index v5 (NOAA, public domain) For each event, every published prediction is documented with its source, year, original wording (e.g., '115 ± 10', 'strong El Niño'), and central numerical value used for the comparison. The original publications are in the agency archives and the peer-reviewed literature. 4. Headline Result [SYNTHESIS] For each of the 5 events, the table below shows the now-known truth, Infinity's number when the same locked method is applied to the same data window, and the signed distance. Full Results [SYNTHESIS] Every event, with every published prediction in chronological order by publication year, and Infinity's number marked 'today'. Same data, applied today, placed next to what others reported and what later turned out to be true. Reproducibility [METHODOLOGY] Anyone with the source code can re-run this exact computation and verify the result matches the file in this record. Source file: infinity/failed_predictions_evaluation.py Command: python -m infinity.failed_predictions_evaluation Random seed: 42 (fixed for full reproducibility) Dependencies: Python 3.12+ numpy certifi urllib (stdlib) The Infinity engine source code is available in the Infinity repository (linked in the related-identifiers section of this record). 7. Cross-References [METHODOLOGY] This observation ledger is the contextualizing half of a coherent bundle. The companions are: 100-Test Validation Suite — instrument check that established the engine's natural domain on known signals 16 Exploratory Experiments — applies the validated engine to open scientific questions Locked Pre-Registered Forecast — applies the same locked method this record uses on documented past events to make a falsifiable forward prediction 142-Oscillator Registry — the canonical registry referenced by every Infinity record Companion records cross-linked on Zenodo (navigable in both directions): Isreferencedby: 10.5281/zenodo.19514937 Ispartof: 10.5281/zenodo.19515578 Ispartof: 10.5281/zenodo.19515585 Version history: VersionDateDOIChange summary1.0.02026-04-1110.5281/zenodo.19513020Initial side-by-side observation on 5 documented forecasting events. Quiet observation framing per feedback_no_competition_framing.md.1.1.02026-04-11(this record)Same observation tables. Adds (a) explicit note that this records distance-from-truth percentages and is NOT subject to Bonferroni correction (its claims were never spectral matches against the registry); (b) hasPart back-links into companion records. 8. Falsifiability Protocol [METHODOLOGY] This record itself is not a forward prediction — it is a characterization of past behavior. Any reader can re-run the comparison module on the same cached data and verify the numbers in this record exactly. If a number disagrees, the record's claims do not hold and the discrepancy must be reported. The published predictions cited in section 5 are taken from their respective agency archives and peer-reviewed papers; the citations in the JSON file allow any reader to look them up independently. 9. Honest Limitations [METHODOLOGY] What this observation record does NOT prove: This is not a competition. Per feedback_no_competition_framing.md, Infinity is not 'beating' or 'losing to' any published method. The record documents what each method produced; it does not score them. Hindcast selection bias. The events covered were chosen because they have well-documented predictions and now-known truth. We cannot generalize from documented past events to undocumented future events. Same-data requirement. Infinity is applied to the data each agency had at prediction time. The numbers depend on that truncation being correct; the truncation logic is documented in the source code. Method scope. Harmonic regression is suited for cyclic phenomena with stable fundamental periods. Outside that domain (like ENSO), it naturally produces values close to the long-term mean. This is not a failure; it is the natural behavior of the method on that kind of data. Bonferroni context (added in v1.1.0). This record reports raw distance-from-truth percentages and is NOT subject to the 142-oscillator multiple-comparison correction that applies to spectral cross-tradition matches in the validation suite and exploratory experiments. The numbers in this record remain exactly as published in v1.0.0 because they were never spectral matches against the registry; they are direct hindcast outputs of the locked harmonic forecaster compared to known truth values. The v1.1.0 republish exists to (a) cross-link to the companion records via hasPart and isReferencedBy on Zenodo, and (b) explicitly note that the no-Bonferroni-needed status of this record's claims is a consequence of its method, not an exemption. 10. Doctrine [METHODOLOGY] This record's framing is governed by the following durable doctrine principles, which apply to all Infinity publications regardless of kind: feedback_no_competition_framing.md — Infinity does not WIN, LOSE, BEAT, or RANK against anyone. Side-by-side observation only — chronological, no scores. Forbidden words: win, lose, beat, vs, rank, leaderboard, best, worst. feedback_validation_vs_discovery.md — When Infinity's number happens to land close to truth (e.g., Infinity's cycle 25 hindcast at -20.6%), this is method characterization, not discovery, not victory. 11. File Manifest [MEASURED] Every file in this upload, with size and SHA-256 hash. Any reviewer can download a file and verify it matches the hash here. If the hash differs, the file has been altered after publication and the description's claims may not apply.
