NRS-21111 | Register of Gazetted Conditional Leases [Maitland Land Board Office]

The Crown Land Act of 1884 (48, 52, 54 Vic. No.18) made provision for conditional leaseholds to apply for land adjoining existing conditional purchases. They were not to exceed three times the area of the conditional purchase. The selector also gained the right to purchase the area of the conditional lease within five years. This provision also took into account pre-emptive leases made into conditional leases post the 1884 Act.This series of registers contains a record of all approved (gazetted) Conditional Leases for the land districts controlled by the Maitland Land Board Office. Each entry contains information relating to the original applicant as well as subsequent transferees. The information was entered into the register in numerical order according to the Conditional Lease Number published in the NSW Government Gazette. The numbering is numerical but intermittent. The register records information such as the names and addresses of the Lessees, the date of application or transfer of lease, the area applied for, a description of the area applied for, the deposit and rent amounts determined, any conditions ordered by the Land Board, the Conditional Purchases to which the Lease is attached, and the issue date of Certificate of Fulfilment of Conditions. Volumes are arranged annually and numerically. Most volumes record the gazetted conditional leases for one district only, and are arranged annually and numerically. Some volumes document activity in numerous land districts controlled by the Maitland Land Board Office. These have an index of the districts in the front, and are internally arranged with each district separately organised annually and numerically.The related series 'Index of Conditional Leases Granted'  is an alphabetical index listed by surname of the lessees with the related conditional lease number and district.
