Data and matlab codes underlying manuscript NGS-2024-06-01394 "Preferential pathways in catchments induce simple functioning but complex chemical transport" submitted to Nature Geoscience. The zipfiles are grouped. Retention_data_stream_flow_slate_catchments.zip Holds the retention curves and the specific streamflow data shown in Fig. 1 in section "Preferential pathways, watershed simplicity and streamflow generation". Runoff_observations_simulations_Colpach.zip provide the simulation ensemple for the case with and without macropores, and matlab routines to calculate the shannon entropy of runoff and the dissipation rate and create Fig. 3 a, b,c d. Catflow_simulations_hillslope_97_no_macropores.zip and Catflow_simulations_hillslope_97_with_macropores.zip provide soil moisture, matric potential and subsurface flow rates simulated for a selected hillslope 97. It also provides Matlab codes for calculation dissipation rates and creating Fig. 3 e, f,g h.  groundwater_simulations.zip provides the data underlying section "Preferential pathways, aquifer complexity and travel times of chemicals" and matlab codes to calculate shannon entropy, dissipation rates and analyze particle trajectories as well as create all the panels in Fig. 4 and 5.
