VPRS 19416 Geophysical Survey Data

This series is largely comprised of data collected through airborne, land and marine geophysical surveys undertaken by Geological Survey Victoria (VA 4118).  The records in this series are grouped by survey number and the data associated with each survey varies. Many surveys in this series are airborne magnetic and radiometric surveys where aircraft is fitted with magnetic and/or radiometric (gamma-ray spectrometric) equipment and is flown in lines across the survey area. The equipment would then measure variations in the magnetic field and radioelements: potassium (K), uranium (U) and thorium (Th) near the Earth’s surface.  Typically, this data was compiled into maps and plans. The data may include magnetometer and spectrometer and multiplot technical charts; travers and traced charts; photo strips and mosaics (airborne photos sometimes marked with what appears to be flight lines); altimeter, speed and diurnal readings; flight calibrations; check lists and field sheets; natural gamma and bore logs; test and tie lines; preliminary and recovered flight charts; flight indexes and tie crossovers; navigation and anomaly location and locality plans; base station plots; reports; quality control (QC) documentation or repeatability analysis; gravity processing and natural gamma logs and other technical data and charts. While geophysical surveys were the responsibility of the Geological Survey of Victoria, surveys were undertaken by both public agencies and private operators and contractors.
