Synergistic interactions between gut bacteria and oxygen adaptation to develop next-generation probiotics

We co-isolated Faecalibacterium prasunitzii with Desulfovibrio piger, a sulfate reducing bacteria, and describe their cross-feeding in relation to growth and butyrate production. Furthermore, we adapt the F. prasunitzii isolate to tolerate oxygen exposures, and in proof-of-concept studies we demonstrate that the symbiotic product is tolerated by mice and humans and colonizes the human gut
