Saccopharynx lavenbergi, is collectively described as a Gulper eel. These deep-sea creatures exist at bathypelagic depths (2-3,000 m) in the Eastern Central Pacific ocean. They are characterized by an enlarged mouth and eel-like body.The Saccopharynx lavenbergi mitochondrial genome was sequenced by the University of Tokyo to study the phylogenetic relationships between a number of different fish species.
