Cutthroat trout inhabit pristine North American lakes and streams on the West Coast, and are prime targets for anglers. They are closely related to the widely propagated and popular rainbow trout. Their need for clean water and their close relation with rainbow trout have been detrimental in the face of habitat destruction and stocking. Conservation and research efforts have revealed multiple lineages of cutthroat trout that are based on habitat isolation from ancient geologic processes. In this project, we generated a genome assembly of a westslope cutthroat trout (O. clarkii lewisi), one of the lineages, from Connor Lake, British Columbia.
