The article examines the role of agriculture in the history of penitentiary systems of such countries as Great Britain, France,Germany, and Sweden. Cooperation with agricultural communities, farms and then agricultural enterprises for many penitentiary systems of European countries has become not only an economic necessity, but also re-socialization. Labor in agriculture brings not only economic benefits, but also helps inmates to acquire new knowledge and skills, and in some cases, a new profession, which in the future will facilitate their employment in freedom.
