Rhizobium species are well-known for establishing nitrogen-fixing root-nodules and stimulating leguminous plant growth. In this study, bacterial strains that were previously isolated from common bean nodules and maintained at the SEMIA Culture Collection were assessed to identify Rhizobium strains’ ability to control Sclerotium rolfsii, a fungus that causes serious damage to the common bean and other important crops. SEMIA 439 was detected as a strong in vitro antagonistic strain which demonstrated high biocontrol efficacy in planta, thus being selected for genome sequencing.
