Data for the project "Reading in Early Childhood Settings: Promoting Socioemotional Development in the Digital Age"

This collection contains datasets from the project "Reading in Early Childhood Settings: Promoting Socioemotional Development in the Digital Age. The data were gathered during the school year 2022 - 2023. Different data sets were collected before and/or after implementing the 10-week literature-based program called SEDA (Socioemotional Skills for the Digital Age). Codebooks for each dataset are also included. 1. The first two datasets are on the home literacy environment profile and rating gathered through the Modified Home Literacy Environment Questionnaire (MHLEQ). The MHLEQ was based on the instrument by Umek, Podlesek, and Fekonja (2005) with additional items on participant demographics and digital reading. The datasets below are on story comprehension, which was gathered using the assessment tool called Porozumenie súvislého príbehu: porozumenie explicitného a implicitného významu textu (Comprehension of a coherent story: understanding the explicit and implicit meaning of a text) (Zápotočná, Urban 2020). The researcher and a second rater scored the children's answers for the pre-test and the post-test. Interrater reliability on the tests was checked by analyzing randomly selected pairs of items from the two raters. The scores were adjusted based on the results of the reliability tests to finalize the pre-test and post-test results. The final sets were used for the analysis. The datasets below are on pre-primary teachers' perceptions, attitudes, and practices in using children’s books to develop socioemotional skills. The researcher developed an online survey to gather the data, with the first set of data from April to May 2022 and the second set of data in July 2022. The data sets have two versions - the original Slovak and the English translations.
