The Hipparcos and Tycho Catalogues are the primary scientific products of the European Space Agency (ESA)'s Hipparcos astrometric satellite. The satellite operated in orbit for four years, from November 1989 to March 1993, and returned high-quality scientific data during this period. The main catalogue contains highly precise positional, proper motion, and trigonometric parallax information for 118,218 celestial objects. This dataset was publicly released in 1997.
