We conducted a comprehensive assessment of how edaphic and climatic factors, along with global change drivers, regulate NMEI. Specifically, we aimed to: (1) identify the key biotic and abiotic mediators regulating NMEI; and (2) determine the magnitude and direction of NMEI responses to anthropogenic effects (e.g., land-use change and fertilization) and climate change factors (e.g., warming, elevated CO₂, drought, and fire).
