Targeted antibiotic removal of the Daphnia magna microbiota

Daphnia magna is an important zooplankton species that is used as a model system in multiple facets of ecology. We used three distinct antibiotics, aztreonam, erythromycin, and sulfamethoxazole, to remove the major taxa in the Daphnia magna microbiota. We then examined the effects of this removal on host fitness and on the rest of the bacterial community composition. We also crossed the antibiotic treatments with a dietary treatment and a temperature treatment to understand how these effects change across ecological contexts.
