Effects of pretreatment with butyrate-producing gut commensals on murine bacterial pneumonia

To assess the effects of butyrogenic gut commensals on Klebsiella pneumoniae-induced pneumonia, female C57BL/6 mice were given daily oral gavage with 10^8 colony-forming units of either Faecalibacterium prausnitzii A2-165 or Anaerobutyricum soehngenii in 100 µL 10% glycerol stock for four weeks, while control mice received anaerobically prepared sterile 10% glycerol stock. Faecal samples were collected at the start and end of the 28-day pretreatment period. Microbiota were characterised using 16S rRNA gene sequencing.
