Study Description
The purpose of the Global Network for Women's and Children's Health Research was to develop and test feasible, sustainable interventions to improve the outcome of women and children and to develop research capacity in resource-poor settings. Since most of the sites had weak health care systems, unacceptably high rates of maternal and neonatal mortality, and lacked birth and death registries, they lacked precise data on outcomes and measures of care. Information from this vital registry system allowed the Global Network to document maternal and neonatal mortality, designed trials to address the major causes of poor outcomes, assessed the outcomes of the interventions, and ultimately disseminated the results as the basis of public health policy. All pregnant women who lived in the study designated geographical area and the infants from the women's pregnancies
