Identification of Core Competencies for the Bachelor Degree in Façade Engineering

The Bachelor degree in Façade Engineering under civil Engineering department at Birla Institute of Technology and Science Pilani (BITS), Dubai campus is a new program initiative considering the landscape of Dubai’s booming real estate industry. Façade Engineering demands need for modern architecture and complex buildings design that supports high efficiency and sustainability. The civil engineering department at BITS Pilani holds a core educational principle of balancing general education and technical education to prepare engineers for 21st century demands and job readiness. To accomplish this department mission curriculum is designed to be at the intersection of engineering science, business, society, and technology. The purpose of this paper is to examine, evaluate, identify core competencies required in designing and developing Façade Engineering undergraduate program curriculum using Delphi method. With literature review and using Delphi method identified nine primary competencies: Team work, technical expertise, design and analysis, project management, performance analysis, self-efficacy, communication and collaboration, regulatory compliance, and sustainability awareness.
