Temporal navigation for festival maps on mobile devices

Maps are powerful tools for communicating spatiotemporal data across different domains. However, their potential is often limited by insufficient emphasis on temporal aspects and the interaction challenges on mobile devices. This study, based on background research and needs assessment, presents an innovative approach to presenting and managing spatiotemporal data on event maps on mobile devices. The research uses the Glastonbury Festival 2024 lineup as a case study to develop and evaluate prototype interfaces. By incorporating navigation and time-based map symbologies, it aims to provide users with a smooth experience, helping them make quick decisions about where to go and when without having to switch between different screens. Findings demonstrate that integration of spatiotemporal data into mobile maps improves the usability of event maps during on-site use and offers an alternative to the traditional separation of maps and temporal information. Despite its limitations, the study provides valuable insights for future research on mobile event maps regarding the design interfaces for displaying and managing temporal information.
