This dataset comprises natural remanent magnetization (NRM), thermal demagnetization, and anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility (AMS) data for paleomagnetic samples collected from the Altash section in southwestern Tarim Basin, and is primarily utilized for magnetostratigraphic studies of this section. Combined with isotopic dating results, the chronological framework of the Altash section will be established by correlating records of geomagnetic polarity reversals preserved in rocks or sediments with the standard geomagnetic polarity timescale. From 2020 to 2021, the research team primarily drilled oriented paleomagnetic samples from the section at 1-meter intervals using a drilling rig; these samples were processed into 2 cm-diameter cylinders in the laboratory. Oriented hand specimens were also collected in some localities, which were fabricated into 2 cm × 2 cm × 2 cm cubes in the laboratory. The paleomagnetic experimental setup includes two core instruments: 1. Superconducting rock magnetometer, used to measure the remanent magnetization and rock magnetic parameters of paleomagnetic samples; 2. MFK Kappabridge, employed to measure the magnetic susceptibility and anisotropy of magnetic susceptibility of geological samples. Initially, samples were selected at 10-meter intervals for testing, totaling 298 specimens, of which 221 yielded stable remanent magnetization, with a success rate of 74%. A preliminary chronological framework for the Altash section in southwestern Tarim Basin has been established based on the initial paleomagnetic results; upon completion of full testing of all paleomagnetic data and combination with precise isotopic ages, a high-precision magnetostratigraphic sequence for the Altash section in southwestern Tarim Basin will be established.
