OPTIONS: Knowledge, Attitudes, and Practices Survey with Providers of Pre-Exposure Prophylaxis - Zimbabwe

These data are from a cross-sectional survey conducted among healthcare providers providing oral pre-exposure prophylaxis (PrEP) services and healthcare providers who would be providing oral PrEP services in the near future in Zimbabwe. The study was conducted in 26 health facilities in 5 provinces of Zimbabwe in early 2018. The dataset includes information on providers’ familiarity and knowledge of PrEP and their attitudes and beliefs towards PrEP delivery to target populations, specifically adolescent girls and young women. The participating health facilities were selected using a multi-stage approach: first, 5 of 10 provinces were selected randomly. Sites with at least 50 ART clients in those provinces were stratified by province and level of facility, and then probability proportionate to size was used to select sites in each strata for a total of 26 sites. The facility sampling frame included public and private facilities at central, provincial, district and primary levels in both urban and rural areas. Within participating facilities, doctors, nurses, counselors, pharmacists, community workers, and facility/program managers were eligible to participate. The 127 participating providers represent a convenience sample of those available on days of interviews. The objectives of the study were to: 1. Evaluate providers’ familiarity and knowledge of PrEP: effectiveness, safety, side-effects, eligibility criteria, screening, initiation and follow-up requirements, and national HIV guidelines 2. Explore providers’ attitudes and beliefs towards PrEP delivery to target populations, with focus on adolescent girls and young women (AGYW). 3. Explore providers’ views on whether it would be feasible and acceptable to add PrEP delivery to HIV and reproductive health services, based on their experiences delivering those services.
