As of May 2024, a total of around 111.6 billion Japanese yen of the sales proceeds from the Sports Promotion Lottery (toto and BIG lottery) was utilized for the maintenance of regional sports facilities. Since its beginnings in 2002, a cumulative total of approximately 267 billion Japanese yen of subsidies were generated in Japan from the Sports Promotion Lottery so far. Introduced in 2002, the Sports Promotion Lottery or 'toto' lottery in Japan is a lottery allowing sports betting on outcomes of Japan's professional soccer league J. League and foreign football matches. The goal of the lottery is the generation of funding through a portion of sales proceeds to subsidize sports-promotion projects of municipalities and sports organizations.
