VPRS 18555 Register of Taxation, Taxing Master

This series comprises Register of Taxation created by the Taxing Master of the Supreme Court of Victoria (VA 2549). The registers record information on matters considered by the Master in Taxation, as to determine what amount lawyers could charge for their work. The process of assessment or taxation of legal costs is called a "taxation'. The process ensures that only costs which are necessary and proper for the administration of justice are allowed in all cases that come before the Taxing Masters Courts.The information recorded includes: date of Taxation, jurisdiction, name of case, name of solicitors, amount of bill, amount taxed off and remarks.The Taxing Master was first appointed in 1905. The Taxing Master's role was subsumed into the Costs Court in 2010. The Costs Court hears and determines matters relating to costs arising from court proceedings. The Court also hears costs disputes between legal practitioner and their clients.The Master in Equity (as part of the broader role of Taxing Officer and Accountant General) was responsible for arranging payment of costs in equity proceedings, conveyancing and other business of the Court.
