The series consists of ten bound volumes of reports, covering the years from 1887 to 1982, and four subsequent reports in booklet form for the years 1983-1986. The contents of the fifth volume, covering the years from 1938 to 1944, are duplicated in the early portion of the sixth volume, beginning likewise with the Report for 1938 but continuing until 1948. Until the end of 1930, each Report pertains to the calendar year from January to December; thereafter the reporting period coincides with the financial year ending in June, the first such report having been submitted in 1932. The Reports are first numbered in 1947; the one published in that year is called the 131st, the numbering being reckoned, not from the beginning of the series in 1887, but from the foundation of the Hospital in 1817.The content of the reports varies somewhat over the years, but typically includes an overview of the chief events of the year, financial statements, statistics on hospital occupancy and the incidence of various diseases and injuries amongst patients, listings of Hospital office-bearers and medical staff, and a roll of significant donors.The earlier four volumes of the series, containing the reports for the years from 1887 to 1937, are much knocked and worn, and a number of pages are loose in the first and, especially, the third volumes. No pages, however, appear to be actually missing.
