"Despite its protected status, the western North Atlantic right whale (Eubalaena glacialis) population remains critically endangered, numbering about 300 individuals. This population's recovery has been hindered by at least three factors: mortality from ship strikes, mortality from entanglement in fishing gear, and, in recent years, a significant decline in reproductive success.
