Breeding programs for aquaculture production species have traditionally developed around phenotypic selection of animals in conjunction with quantitative genetic theory. As with other realms of biology aquaculture production science is currently in the midst of a genomics revolution and there has been increased global focus on the development of genome maps and subsequent identification of markers linked to genes of economic importance.The globally important shrimp species, Litopenaeus vannamei, is an aquaculture species that would benefit substantially from the integration of genomic information into traditional breeding programs, particularly for disease and growth traits. To allow this integration of genomic information, genomic resources and genetic associations to traits of commercial interest need to be developed. The objective of this study is to develop, validate and commercialise a large number of genome wide SNPs for high-throughput genotyping in Litopenaeus vannamei.
