The data compared and explored two pedagogical approaches related to the van Hiele theory and the cognitive load theory. Specifically, it compared the van Hiele teaching phases and the worked examples instruction for mathematics learning respectively. The study focuses on learning simultaneous equations and particularly on the acquisition and retention of knowledge, the conceptual and procedural knowledge acquired and retained and other students' characteristics such as gender. The data were obtained from senior secondary school students attending public co-education schools in Nigeria. This dataset consists of six different files which are obtained from two groups at three different time points.
