This ensemble of 2D scalar field was constructed to demonstrate vertical instabilities in merge trees. It can be used to test merge tree distance metrics for stability against vertical branch swaps in the context of outlier detection: a stable distance should exhibit noise-like behavior through most if the ensemble, with a single outlier member clearly distinguihsed. An unstable distance will show clusters that occclude the outlier.
