The effect of a dietary Moringa oleifera seed extract on mouse gut microbiota

Moringa oleifera Lam. is a tropical plant, used for centuries as food and traditional medicine, including its use as a treatment for diabetes. An isothiocyanate-enriched moringa seed extract (MSE) was prepared and fed to mice on a high-fat and low-fat diet to evaluate its effects in mitigating the symptoms associated with obesity and insulin resistance. Fecal samples were collected from the animals at various time points throughout the study and cecal samples were collected at the end of the study. 16S rRNA gene sequencing was performed on the fecal and cecal samples to evaluate the microbiome changes in response to MSE supplementation.
