Water contents in the primary melts and mantle sources of global plume-induced OIBs

We recovered H₂O contents in primary melts of Cenozoic basalts from the Kerguelen and Crozet Archipelagoes using early-crystallized clinopyroxene phenocrysts in basalts. Several lines of evidence support that the phenocrysts used for back calculation have preserved their initial water contents. Trace element and Sr-Nd-Pb isotopic compositions indicate that the studied basalts represent direct melting products of the Kerguelen and Crozet mantle plume. Along with the calculation for Kerguelen and Crozet basalts, the data of other plume-induced OIBs were compiled and H₂O contents in their corresponding primary melts and mantle sources were back calculated.
