Anterior perineal hernia – a rare complication of pelvic exenteration

Perineal hernias are protrusions of intraabdominal contents resulting from weakness of the pelvic floor muscles. They are a rare complication after ultraradical pelvic surgeries with no established gold standard for surgical treatment. This is the third case in the literature of an anterior perineal hernia developed after radical surgery for bladder carcinoma repaired transperineally with a synthetic mesh. The perineal approach with an implantation of a polypropylene mesh was successfully applied, confirming its main place in the surgical treatment of perineal hernias. During the two-year follow-up no postoperative complications or recurrence of the hernia were registered
