# ABS Consumer Price Index Indicator
Consumer Price Index (CPI) - Australia data listing includes data sourced from the [ABS](https://www.abs.gov.au/) and licensed for reuse under the [CC BY 4.0](https://creativecommons.org/licenses/by/4.0/) licence.
## Consumer Price Index (CPI) Data
The CPI indicator is a measure of inflation and includes statistics about prices for categories of households expenditure. The quarterly and monthly CPI measures change in the price of consumer goods in the Australian market over time.
It is constructed using a weighted basket of goods and services representing typical household expenditure, with weights derived from the Household Expenditure Survey. It is calculated across capital cities and aggregated into a national index, expressed relative to a base year.
The CPI plays a central role in economic policy, particularly for inflation targeting by the Reserve Bank of Australia, as well as in wage negotiations and contract indexation.
