Dataset for "Experimental BTV-3 and BTV-8 infection of Culicoides sonorensis biting midges"

Biting midges of a laboratory colony of Culicoides sonorensis were infected with bluetongue virus (BTV) serotype 3 (BTV3) and 8 (BTV8) via feeding of an infectious bloodmeal. Additionally, midges were fed a bloodmeal without virus as a negative control group (NC). Two separate trials were conducted. Samples were collected immediately after the bloodmeal zero days post infection (0dpi) and after an incubation period of six days (6dpi). Individual midges were tested in a BTV RT-qPCR and viral genome copies per midge were calculated using an external full virus BTV-3 standard.
