Choice of Tradition: the field of possibilities for the students of IFSP

Abstract: This paper analyses the social production of choices of universities made by the family of high school students of Instituto Federal de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia de São Paulo (IFSP). The field of possibilities in relation to the universities has been socially defined by the history of the students' families. Aiming to overcome their parents, the students develop a different lifestyle from the previous generation, postponing the acquisition of economic assets and investing their time and money in the acquisition of cultural capital in its academic form. The research methodology consists of 21 semi-structured interviews with students, who were chosen from the results of a survey applied with all the 257 students of 12th grade.
