Flashy females shed light on reciprocal nature of courtship in frogs

We examined courtship behaviour of 15–20 females from each of four populations of red-eyed treefrogs. We measured mating behaviour using a no-choice experimental design. Females were tested in three 10-min trials in which she was presented, in random order, with a model from the local or one of two non-local populations. We recorded the occurrence of back and/or flank displays and time invested in flank display. Due to the uniformly short duration of back displays (&lt;3 s), we did not measure duration for this trait. We recorded the advertisement calls of 12–22 males from each of six populations of red-eyed treefrogs. We determined the dominant frequency and the interquartile range bandwidth (bandwidth; the frequency range containing the middle 50% of sound energy) using Raven 1.4.We also include data from mate choice trials conducted by Jacobs et al. in 2013 using live males and females.
