An XMM Long-Look at NGC 5548

NGC5548, one of the brightest, most strongly variable and beststudied AGN inXrays, has only 20 ksec in the XMM GTO programme. We propose a 130 ksec longlook. When combined with ongoing RXTE monitoring, this will allow determinationof the fluctuation power density spectrum over an unprecedented range of timescales from virgul100 to 4x107 sec and measurement of the low frequency breakcharacteristic time scale. NGC 5548 has been claimed to show quasi periodicoscillation; these data will provide a rigorous test. The deep RGS observationwill allow the first direct view of its rich spectrum, which includes a strongwarm absorber, soft excess and iron line.
