IMPROVING METHODS FOR EXTINGUISHING FIRES IN ELECTRIC VEHICLES

The rapid global adoption of electric vehicles (EVs) has introduced significant advancements in sustainable transportation while simultaneously creating new challenges for fire safety and emergency response. Unlike conventional internal combustion engine vehicles, electric vehicles rely on high-voltage lithium-ion battery systems that present unique fire hazards, including thermal runaway, toxic gas emissions, electrical shock risks, and the possibility of reignition after initial suppression. These characteristics require firefighting strategies that differ considerably from those used for traditional vehicle fires. This paper examines the causes and characteristics of electric vehicle fires, reviews modern fire suppression methods, and analyzes international best practices for emergency response. Particular attention is given to cooling techniques, specialized firefighting equipment, firefighter safety, and post-fire monitoring procedures. The paper also discusses the growing presence of electric vehicles in Uzbekistan and evaluates the country's preparedness to address battery-related fire incidents. Based on international experience and current technological developments, practical recommendations are proposed to improve firefighting operations, emergency responder training, regulatory frameworks, and technical resources. The study concludes that integrating advanced suppression technologies with comprehensive training and updated operational procedures will significantly enhance the safety and effectiveness of fire response involving electric vehicles.
